Periodontal disease, otherwise known as gum disease, is a disease where we've got bacteria that are well-ensconced in your gums and in your bones. Everyone has these bacteria, but in the case of those people that have developed gum disease, more or less this bacteria is having a party at your expense. And for the patients that are seeing the bleeding gums or the bad breath consistently, on a consistent basis, these patients are the ones where their immune system can no longer keep all these bacteria in check.

Those patients are the ones that have developed this gum disease and are losing bone, are losing their gum tissue, and eventually they're going to lose that support system around their teeth, and that's why we're seeing the wiggly teeth. So that, in a nutshell, is what gum disease or periodontitis is. Gum disease has, at this point, we know of 57 different diseases that the bacteria that cause gum disease are associated with in the rest of the body, such as there's a close intimate relationship with diabetes and gum disease, cardiovascular disease, dementia, Alzheimer's, you name it, there's 57 different diseases.

Unfortunately, people think that the mouth isn't connected to the rest of the body. It is. It's the gateway and all that bacteria goes into your bloodstream each time you talk, you brush, anything, any sort of movement, they're constantly moving.

So the bacteria here are going to end up in your heart and they're going to cause problems. The bacteria here can end up in your brain and they're going to cause problems. And a lot of patients don't understand.

They just think it's all right here, but unfortunately it's traveling around and our colleagues in the medical community are now starting to realize this as well. And they're becoming more and more aware of how important it is to get gum disease or periodontitis under control. A lot of patients that we see have hesitated to come in to see us because they've had bleeding gums or bad breath that their partner or loved one has told them about, and they've just avoided coming because in their mind, they didn't think that it was anything that could be taken care of, or that they've got wiggly teeth and they're just so embarrassed because of the way that their gums and everything look and they just, they feel like there's no hope.

I'm here to tell you there is. I want you to come in. I want to see you because if there is anything that I can do to save your teeth, rest assured, I'm going to do whatever I can.

See How Treating Periodontal Disease Protects Your Overall Health

When you have gum disease, getting professional care quickly is one of the most important steps you can take for your overall health. Bacteria from periodontal infections can enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation throughout your body, contributing to conditions that go well beyond the mouth.

Working with an experienced periodontist like Dr. Kaeley means you are taking a proactive step toward protecting your whole body, not just your smile. Here are some of the benefits of periodontal treatment:

  • Reduced Inflammation - Eliminating harmful bacteria through periodontal treatment reduces gum inflammation and may lower your risk of chronic diseases that are made worse by systemic inflammation throughout the body.
  • Improved Heart Health - Studies have shown a connection between gum disease and heart disease. Treating periodontal disease helps reduce that risk, giving your heart an added layer of protection.
  • Better Diabetes Management - For people with diabetes, treating gum disease can help improve blood sugar control. Healthier gums make it easier for the body to regulate glucose levels more effectively.
  • Enhanced Respiratory Function - Oral bacteria from gum disease can be inhaled into the lungs, raising the risk of respiratory infections. Treating periodontal disease reduces that bacterial load and supports better breathing.
  • Strengthened Immune System - Reducing the bacterial burden in the mouth frees up your immune system to focus on protecting the rest of your body from infection.

By working with Dr. Kaeley, you are doing more than caring for your smile. She will help you understand the importance of gum health and give you the tools to promote better overall health.

I had consulted and done treatment last year for an entire year with another dentist and they were unable to repair my gums. I have only heartfelt thanks for Dr. Kaeley for helping me repair my gums. Dr. Kaeley will check my pockets next year and I could require another round of LANAP depending on how deep the pockets are. Dr, Kaeley is very knowledgeable & experienced. I don't think there is another gum specialist here in the Bay area like her.

ABSOLUTELY the best

I am beyond happy to have found this place. They're so caring, gentle and all the staffs are so friendly. I used to be so deathly afraid to get a basic cleaning for my teeth because no matter how much I tell them to be gentle at other places (due to sensitive teeth), they don't seem to listen...

I used to be so deathly afraid to get a basic cleaning for my teeth because no matter how much I tell them to be gentle at other places (due to sensitive teeth), they don't seem to listen but when I started going here for my gum treatments, I always look forward to going now. Please go here if you need periodontics treatment because they are ABSOLUTELY the best.
