Dental anxiety is a very, very important topic. A lot of patients have dental fear, be it from a bad childhood experience or just the fear of the unknown and not having control. We totally get it.

That's why for all of our patients that undergo surgery, we do oral sedation. And with that oral sedation, it's a pill that you take the night before and 190 minutes before your appointment, so that when you come in, it really takes the edge off of things. You won't be out cold, you won't be sleeping.

Some patients do fall asleep, but typically you won't. You'll be able to talk, you should be able to walk normally, but it takes the edge off things and puts you more into a twilight where you just don't care. For most patients, I'd say for 80% to 85% of our patients, that is more than sufficient.

For the balance of our patients, sometimes we need to kick it up a little higher and we need to do more of an IV sedation, moderate sedation, in which case we can bring in an anesthesiologist and we can make sure that you're nice and comfortable. And that's when you will truly go to sleep. They'll start an IV, they'll give you the medications and then we'll go ahead and do the procedure and then we'll bring you back out.


But the entire time you can still communicate with us if we need to, but likely you'll be out pretty good.

  • Oral Sedation - A prescribed pill taken before your appointment helps you arrive already feeling relaxed. You'll remain conscious and responsive throughout your procedure but deeply at ease. You may find yourself drifting in and out during treatment.
  • IV Sedation - Delivered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation works quickly to bring you to a calm, sleep-like state while keeping you conscious throughout. Dr. Kaeley can adjust your level of sedation at any point to make sure you stay comfortable.

Both types of sedation have lingering effects that can last several hours after your appointment, so you'll need to arrange a ride home in advance. With the right sedation in place, getting the periodontal or implant care you need becomes a far less daunting experience.
